How ClickUp handles this workflow
Permanently deletes a single task by its ID, removing it from whichever List it belonged to.
Request behavior and expectations
This is not a move to trash from the API's perspective -- the task is deleted outright, along with its comments, checklists, and time entries, rather than being recoverable from a ClickUp trash view the way a manual deletion in the app sometimes is.
Implementation details
Because subtasks are themselves tasks with a parent reference, deleting a parent task does not automatically delete its subtasks -- an automation that needs to clear out an entire task tree has to look up and delete each subtask separately rather than relying on a single cascading call.
Use cases
Clean up test or placeholder tasks after automated runs.
- Archive and delete stale tasks in ClickUp
- Remove completed tasks as part of cleanup pipelines
- Prune tasks created for demos in ClickUp
- Synchronize deletions with external systems to avoid orphan data
