Move a File/Folder

Last updated

How Moving a File/Folder Actually Works in Dropbox

Moving uses POST /2/files/move_v2, specifying a from_path and a to_path -- the same endpoint used for renaming, since a move is really just relocating an item to a new path, whether or not the filename also changes.

Real API Details

The destination's parent folder has to already exist -- move_v2 doesn't create intermediate folders along the way, so moving into a brand-new folder structure means creating those folders first with a separate call.

Practical Considerations

An autorename option can be set to automatically append a suffix if something already exists at the destination path, rather than the move failing outright on a naming conflict.

Use cases

Common automations around file organization.

  • Shift assets to new project folders as workflows advance.
  • Consolidate related items under a new parent folder.
  • Support reorganization tasks triggered by external systems.
  • Preserve historical references by updating linked paths in downstream tools.
