Iterate Attachments

How data moves through Gmail

Enumerates attachments found on messages, but the Gmail API doesn't return attachment file content directly in the message listing -- each attachment is referenced by an attachmentId that has to be fetched separately.

Execution flow and processing

Getting the actual file bytes requires a follow-up call to the attachments endpoint using that message ID and attachment ID together, since the message resource itself only carries metadata and the reference.

Operational considerations

Processing many messages with attachments means this follow-up fetch happens once per attachment, not once per message, which affects how quickly a large mailbox scan runs.

Use cases

Practical automation patterns for attachment handling in Gmail.

  • Bulk attachment scanning for malware detection within Gmail.
  • Archival of large attachments to cloud storage with metadata tagging.
  • Label-based routing of messages containing specific file types.
  • Compliance review by cataloging email attachments in a separate system.
  • Cost-aware processing by limiting rate of attachment operations.
