Hands-on training for Google Programmable Search Engine
We train the people who will actually maintain the PSE day to day: whoever owns the site list has to know how to add or remove domains and URL patterns in the control panel at programmablesearchengine.google.com, how Refinements and Promotions work, and why a page that is "in scope" still will not show up in results until Google has actually crawled it.
Delivery model and who it is for
This is for content owners and developers who will manage the PSE after launch — content owners typically need the control-panel side (site list, Refinements, Promotions, look-and-feel), while developers need the Custom Search JSON API side (API key management in Google Cloud Console, the cx parameter, request and response structure, and the 100-free-queries/day quota that governs how the integration can be tested without triggering billing).
How outcomes are achieved
- Walkthroughs of the control panel: adding and removing sites, switching between restricted and "search the entire web" modes, and configuring Refinements labels and Promotions.
- API fundamentals: generating and restricting an API key in Google Cloud Console, constructing a JSON API request with the cx and key parameters, and reading the response's 10-result-per-call, no-relevance-score structure.
- Quota literacy: monitoring usage in Cloud Console's APIs and Services dashboard against the free 100-queries/day cap, and what happens once it is exceeded without billing enabled.
- Crawl troubleshooting: using Search Console's URL Inspection tool and sitemap submission to diagnose why an in-scope page is not appearing in PSE results.
- A written runbook covering this specific instance's site list, Refinements taxonomy, and API key rotation process, since none of that is documented anywhere Google maintains.
A single-site PSE with the free widget needs very little training beyond the control-panel basics. Training investment grows with API usage — once a team is calling the JSON API programmatically and managing Cloud billing and quotas, that is the material that actually needs hands-on practice, not just reading Google's own documentation.
Note: practice changes against a duplicate PSE instance where possible, since site-list and Refinements changes propagate to the live widget immediately with no staging environment.
