Create a List

How Mailchimp handles this workflow

Creates a new audience (what Mailchimp's API still calls a "list" even though the UI has rebranded the term to "audience"), the top-level container that holds subscribers.

Request behavior and expectations

Each list requires its own default from-name, reply-to address, and permission-reminder text to be set at creation, since Mailchimp requires these details for compliance with anti-spam regulations.

Implementation details

Subscribers, segments, and merge fields all belong to one specific list -- there's no cross-list subscriber record, so the same person subscribed to two different lists exists as two separate subscriber records.

Use cases

List creation scenarios in automation setups.

  1. Initialize a new product launch audience.
  2. Prepare regional lists for localized campaigns.
  3. Set defaults for data retention and compliance.
  4. Streamline onboarding workflows for teams.
