What this operation supports in Mattermost
Deletes a post by its ID, removing it from the channel view.
Implementation details
Mattermost marks the post as deleted internally rather than purging the row immediately, which is why a System Console compliance export can still account for it even though ordinary users and the API no longer see it once deleted.
Operational considerations
If other posts in the same thread reply to the deleted one, those replies remain in place -- deleting a parent post does not cascade and remove its replies, so a thread can end up with replies to a message that's no longer visible, which is worth accounting for in any automation that cleans up posts in bulk.
Use cases
Automate cleanup of test data or sensitive information from channels after verification jobs.
- Remove ephemeral test posts after QA cycles.
- Prune automated reminders that are no longer needed.
- Retain audit-only logs while removing user-facing content.
- Enforce data retention policies in automated flows.
