Activate a Bounce

Last updated

What this operation supports in Postmark

Reactivates a bounced recipient address so future sends to it are no longer automatically suppressed.

Implementation details

Postmark automatically deactivates an address after certain bounce types (like a hard bounce) to protect sender reputation -- this call flips that address back to active, identified by the bounce's own numeric ID rather than the email address itself.

Operational considerations

Not every bounce can be activated -- Postmark's bounce record includes a CanActivate flag, and reactivating an address that genuinely doesn't exist just sets up another bounce and reputation hit on the next send.

Use cases

Postmark use cases for reactivating a bounced message include retrying deliveries after manual remediation, resuming automated workflows, and re-evaluating sender reputation. In workflows, Postmark handles state transitions to reflect the bounce reactivation.
