Search Users

How Searching Users Actually Works in WordPress

GET /wp-json/wp/v2/users?search={term} matches against name and login, returning matching user objects with their roles.

Real API Details

By default, this only returns users who have authored at least one public post -- a registered user with no published posts (like a subscriber-level account) won't appear in this search unless the request is authenticated with permission to list all users regardless of post count.

Practical Considerations

An integration expecting to find every registered account, not just published authors, needs an authenticated request with the right capability -- an unauthenticated or lower-privilege search will silently miss non-author users rather than returning an error.

Use cases

Use cases include:

  • Provisioning external systems with WordPress user data.
  • Searching for contributors during content workflows.
  • Audit and governance tasks with cross-system user data.
  • Role-based access automation tied to external triggers.
