How Creating a Record Actually Works in Airtable
POST https://api.airtable.com/v0/{baseId}/{tableIdOrName} creates one or more records, with the request body containing a records array where each entry has a fields object -- up to 10 records can be created in a single call.
Real API Details
Field names in the request have to match the table's actual column names exactly (or their field IDs), and a field left out of the fields object simply starts empty rather than causing an error, so there's no need to specify every column on creation.
Practical Considerations
Creating more than 10 records requires splitting them into multiple calls -- the API rejects a single request with more than 10 records in its array rather than accepting and batching them internally.
Use cases
Automatically create contact or lead records in Airtable from a form submission or an external CRM.
- Log product orders by creating a new row in a sales table when a purchase event fires.
- Capture support tickets from a chat or portal into Airtable for triage.
- Sync inventory adjustments by creating records in an Airtable stock-tracking base.
- Onboard new employees by adding records to an HR table from an external HRIS.
- Seed project tasks by ingesting from a project management tool into Airtable.
