Update an Invoice

Last updated

What this operation supports in QuickBooks

Updates an existing Invoice by its ID, such as its line items, due date, or customer.

Implementation details

This requires the Invoice's current SyncToken, and if any payment has already been applied to the invoice, reducing its total below the amount already paid isn't a valid update.

Operational considerations

Changing an invoice's amount after it's been sent to the customer can create confusion if the customer already has a copy reflecting the original total, so a follow-up notice is often warranted. Because the invoice's due date drives when it's considered overdue, changing it here directly affects aging reports and any automated overdue reminders tied to that date.

Use cases

Automate post-invoice adjustments.

  1. Update line items and pricing.
  2. Sync with payment status.
  3. Notify customers of changes.
  4. Audit invoice modification history.
