Get an order

What this operation supports in Shopify

Retrieves a single order by its ID, returning line items, customer information, and financial and fulfillment status.

Implementation details

The response includes enough detail to render a full order view downstream, though which fields are returned can depend on the API version and requested fields.

Operational considerations

Customer service and fulfillment integrations should resolve the order ID carefully, since Shopify also exposes a separate order "name" (like #1001) that isn't the same value as the underlying order ID used in API calls. The response also distinguishes the order's financial status (like paid or refunded) from its fulfillment status, since the two track genuinely separate parts of the order lifecycle.

Use cases

Typical use cases involve customer support lookups and order verification before refunds.

  • Show order details to an agent in a helpdesk
  • Verify order status before initiating returns
  • Cross-check with warehouse systems for fulfillment steps
  • Attach invoices to customer communications
  • Audit individual order events for compliance
  • Validate customer identity during support calls
