Automation—delivered with precision
EmailOctopus’s automations are a visual workflow builder with a small set of real triggers — a contact being added to a list, a Field changing, or, through the native Shopify integration, an e-commerce event like an abandoned cart or a purchase — followed by steps such as a delay, a conditional branch on a Tag or Field, or a send. It’s a leaner trigger set than some competitors offer, which keeps workflows easy to audit but means journeys have to be built around the List/Tag/Field model rather than deep behavioral scoring.
Teams new to EmailOctopus automation usually start with a single list-join welcome sequence. More mature teams branch into multi-step journeys using Tag-based conditional splits and, where Shopify is connected, order- and cart-triggered flows, all still built on the same underlying List/Tag/Field model rather than a separate segmentation engine.
Every automated send still runs through EmailOctopus’s Amazon SES-backed sending infrastructure, so we watch suppression lists and bounce handling closely, since mishandling them affects the account’s sender reputation, not just one campaign’s stats.
Delivery includes a documented workflow map of every trigger, delay, and Tag/Field condition in EmailOctopus’s automation builder, native Shopify-triggered flows configured where relevant, and suppression and opt-out handling verified against EmailOctopus’s own compliance settings so automations don’t damage deliverability at scale.
Delivery model and outputs
- A documented map of every EmailOctopus automation trigger — list join, Field change, Shopify event — and the delay, branch, or send steps that follow it
- Tag- and Field-based conditional branches configured to route contacts without needing a behavioral-segmentation engine EmailOctopus doesn’t have
- Native Shopify-triggered flows, such as abandoned cart or post-purchase follow-up, where the integration is connected
- Suppression-list and opt-out handling verified against EmailOctopus’s own list settings, since sends run over the account’s shared SES-backed sending reputation
- A tested rollout of each automation against a small segment before it’s applied to the full list
The result is an automation program built entirely on EmailOctopus’s native List, Tag, Field, and Shopify-trigger primitives, with nothing routed through an external automation platform unless a trigger genuinely can’t be expressed inside EmailOctopus itself.
Use cases
Introduction onboarding sequences, post-purchase nurture, re-engagement campaigns, event-triggered reminders, cart abandonment workflows, and retention reactivation—all orchestrated through EmailOctopus rules and data signals.
- Welcome series triggered by subscriber signup with EmailOctopus automation rules.
- Abandoned-cart reminders scheduled via EmailOctopus, with suppression when a purchase occurs.
- Win-back campaigns that react to inactivity, coordinated across segments in EmailOctopus.
- Post-purchase follow-ups that request feedback or encourage cross-sell within the same automation flow.
- Event-triggered reminders for renewals or re-engagement, powered by EmailOctopus signals.
- Lifecycle-based reactivation sequences that scale with subscriber activity, all governed by EmailOctopus rules.
- Seasonal campaigns that adjust messaging cadence automatically via EmailOctopus.
- Internal alerts when performance drifts, so teams can intervene with EmailOctopus controls.
- A/B testing within automated paths to refine timing and content using EmailOctopus data.
- Compliance-driven flows that honor consent preferences stored in EmailOctopus and integrated systems.
These use cases illustrate how EmailOctopus can be the central automation platform, providing fast iteration, reliable delivery, and visible impact on engagement metrics.
