Automation for WeChat Official Account: two account types, different ceilings
WeChat gives every Official Account one of two types, and the choice sets the automation ceiling before any building starts. A Subscription Account can push one broadcast message a day and appears tucked into followers' Subscriptions folder -- built for publishers. A Service Account appears directly in the main chat list, is capped at a handful of mass messages a month, but unlocks the API surface that actual automation depends on: custom menus, template messages, and OAuth-based follower authorization.
The core automation building blocks are the custom menu (up to three top-level buttons, each with a handful of sub-buttons, wired to reply text, mini programs, or external links), template messages for transactional notifications like order or appointment updates, and the message webhook that lets a server respond to follower messages programmatically instead of relying on Tencent's own keyword auto-reply.
None of this works without server configuration: a public HTTPS endpoint, a verification token, and optionally an EncodingAESKey for message encryption, all registered in the Official Account backend before WeChat will route follower messages to your systems at all. Unverified accounts also have a much smaller API surface than WeChat-verified ones, which matters for anything beyond a custom menu.
What we deliver
- Account-type and verification strategy set before build starts, since Subscription vs. Service account and verified vs. unverified change what's technically possible later.
- Webhook service setup -- token verification, optional AES encryption, and message routing -- connecting WeChat's message API to your backend.
- Custom menu configuration mapped to real user journeys rather than a generic three-button default.
- Template message integration for order confirmations, appointment reminders, or status updates, respecting the session and quota rules WeChat enforces.
- OAuth2 web authorization flow so a follower's WeChat profile (openid) ties into your CRM or member system without asking them to re-register.
- QR code generation -- permanent or scene-specific -- for tracking which campaign, store, or channel brought a follower in.
- Integration with your CRM, order system, or helpdesk so WeChat conversations aren't a dead end trapped inside the platform's own admin console.
- A quota and rate-limit map so mass-messaging and API-call automation stays inside what your account tier actually allows.
The Official Accounts Platform gives you a real, if constrained, automation surface -- but only once account type, verification, and the webhook are set up correctly; skipping that groundwork is the most common reason WeChat automation projects stall.
