How break-even works
Each job brings in money and also costs money to deliver. What is left, the contribution, goes toward your fixed costs. Break-even is the number of jobs whose contributions add up to exactly your fixed costs. Every job after that is profit.
Work you can look at
Questions people ask
What counts as a fixed cost?
Anything you pay whether or not you have work: rent, salaried staff, insurance, truck payments, software and loan payments.
What counts as a cost that rises with each job?
Materials, hourly field labor, fuel, subcontractors and payment fees. Express them as a percent of the price of an average job.
Why add a profit goal?
Break-even only covers your costs. Add the profit you want, including your own pay if it is not already in your fixed costs, to see the real target.
