Product feed and Google Merchant Center for online stores
Google Merchant Center turns your product data into free listings and Shopping ads. If the feed is wrong, products are disapproved or show the wrong price. We review and fix the data at its source in the store.
An available setup. We do not publish feed results for The Porch Swing Store. Keeping product addresses unchanged during a rebuild is designed to keep an existing feed working, but we have not verified that here.
Why feeds get products disapproved
Merchant Center checks every product against the page it points at. A price that differs from the page, a missing identifier or a title that says nothing is enough to hold a product back.
Feeds also drift. Prices change, products sell out and attributes get edited, and the feed keeps showing the old state until someone looks.
What we set up
A feed audit
We go through the Merchant Center diagnostics and the feed itself and list what is wrong, grouped by cause.
Better titles and attributes
Titles, descriptions, brand, color, size and category that match how shoppers search, written in the store, not patched in the feed.
Identifiers and categories
Brand, GTIN or MPN where they exist, and the right Google product category for each product type.
Price and stock that match the page
Making sure what the feed says matches what the product page shows, including sale prices and availability.
Shipping and return settings
Shipping and return information in Merchant Center that matches the store's real policies.
A monitoring routine
A recurring look at disapprovals and warnings so problems are caught when they start.
What to look at every week
- Count of products approved, limited and disapproved
- The top disapproval reasons and which products they hit
- Products where the feed price differs from the page
- Products with missing identifiers
- New products that did not reach the feed
- Which products get clicks from free listings versus ads
Google decides what is approved and what ranks. A clean feed removes avoidable problems; it does not guarantee impressions or sales.
- Read your diagnosticsWe pull the Merchant Center issues and the feed and sort them by how many products each affects.
- Fix at the sourceWe correct the data in your store so the fix holds the next time the feed refreshes.
- Recheck and resubmitWe confirm the changes reach Merchant Center and that products move out of warning states.
- MonitorWe set a recurring check and review changes with you after a few weeks.
The Porch Swing Store's rebuild kept its product addresses unchanged, which is the right starting point for an existing feed. We do not publish its Merchant Center results here.
Questions about this playbook
Do I need a feed app?
Often Shopify's own Google channel is enough. We look at what you have first and add a feed tool only where it falls short.
Can you fix disapproved products?
Most disapprovals trace to product data, prices or policies we can correct. Some depend on Google's own review, and we will say which.
Does a rebuild break my feed?
It can if product addresses change. Keeping addresses the same, or redirecting them, is part of the plan.
Is this the same as running ads?
No. The feed is the product data. Shopping ads and free listings use it, and the ads playbook covers the campaigns.
